Green Chillies - Mirchi ka Salam Recipe

It may sound incredible but this dish is cooked to spice up green chillies.

bullet Green chillies 250 gm
bullet Potatoes, peeled and diced 160 gm/ 2/3 cup
bullet Coconut, dessicated 30 gm/2 tbs
bullet Coriander seeds 5 gm/1 tsp
bullet Cumin (jeera) seeds 15 gm/1 tbs
bullet Curry leaves 10
bullet Garlic paste 10 gm/2 tsp
bullet Ginger paste 10 gm/2 tsp
bullet Mustard oil (sarson ka tel) 120 ml/ 1/2 cup
bullet Poppy seeds (khus khus) 10 gm/2 tsp
bullet Red chilli powder 10 gm/2 tsp
bullet Salt to taste
bullet Sesame (til) seeds 10 gm/2 tsp
bullet Tamarind (imlee) 45 gm
bullet Turmeric (haldi) powder 5 gm/1 tsp
  • Roast coriander, cumin, poppy and sesame seeds on a griddle and pound. Roast coconut too. Wash and soak tamarind in 240 ml/1 cup water. Mash well, then squeeze out and discard pulp. Remove stem, slit and deseed chillies without separating them. Pat dry. Heat oil in a kadhai. Fry potatoes till golden brown. Remove.
  • Reserve a few green chillies for garnish. Fry the rest till soft. Drain. In the same oil brown the ginger and garlic pastes, ground seeds, turmeric, chilli powder, curry leaves and coconut. Add green chillies and 480 ml/2 cups water. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Add fried potatoes and simmer till chillies and potatoes are tender. Add tamarind juice through a stainer and let simmer till gravy thickens.
  • Time:
    Preparation: 20 minutes
    Cooking: 30 minutes
  • To Serve: Garnish with slit green chillies and serve with plain boiled rice.
