Gulab Jamun is among India and Pakistan's most popular desserts! This delicious dessert consists of dumplings traditionally made of thickened or reduced milk, soaked in rose flavored sugar syrup. It gets its name from two words: Gulab which means rose (for the rose flavored syrup) and Jamun which is a kind of deep purple colored Indian berry (the cooked dumplings are dark brown in colour).

Ingredients

  • For Gulab Jamun:
  • Dried whole milk 1/2 Kg
  • Egg 1
  • Sugar 1 tbsp
  • Baking powder 1/2 tsp
  • Refined flour 3 tbsp
  • Semolina 3 tbsp
  • Clarified butter for frying + 2 tbsp
  • For Syrup:
  • Sugar 1/2 Kg
  • Water 2 cups
  • Cardamom powder 1/2 tsp
  • Sterling silver leaves, almonds and pistachios for garnishing

Cooking Directions

  1. Mix all Gulab jaman ingredients and knead into dough.

  2. Make into small balls.

  3. Heat clarified butter in wok and fry till golden.

  4. Cook syrup ingredients in a pot till it thickens.

  5. Remove from flame, add jamans in the syrup, and leave for ½ hour.

  6. When jamans have absorbed the syrub, put them in a dish.

  7. Garnish with silver leaves, almonds and pistachios, and serve.
