This delicious mutton dish is cooked lentils, whole spices and coconut to give a rich creamy sauce. Easy to make, and doesn't take up too much time, this mutton aab gosht curry dish is ideal to serve with tandoori roti.

  • Mutton, cut into 1 – 1 1/2 inch pieces 500 g
  • Potatoes, quartered 1/4 kg
  • Channa daal (lentils) 1/2 cup
  • Ginger and garlic paste 1 tsp each
  • Green chilli paste 1 tsp
  • Tomatoes, skinned and chopped 1/2 kg
  • Poppy seeds, finely ground 2 tbsp
  • Coconut powder 25 g
  • Onion 1 medium
  • Whole garam masala (consisting of 6 cloves, 6 pepper corns, 3 inch stick of cinnamon)
  • Salt

Cooking Directions

  1. Boil mutton with ginger, garlic, green chilli paste and salt till almost done, add water or stock for curry.

  2. Boil daal till almost cooked, strain and add to mutton.

  3. Fry sliced or ground onion in oil till pink, add whole garam masala, mutton, daal, potatoes and poppy seeds.

  4. Fry a little, add tomatoes.

  5. Continue frying and add coconut powder made with stock according to directions on the packet.

  6. Boil for a few minutes. Turn off the heat.

  7. Serve with tandoori roti.
