Ingredients

  • Red gram 1 cup
  • Drumsticks(chopped) 200 g
  • Onions(sliced) 3/4 cup
  • Tomatoes(chopped) 1/4 cup
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Water 3 cups
  • Tamarind pulp 3 tsp
  • Oil 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Sesame seeds 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds 2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds 1 tsp
  • Split black gram 2 tsp
  • Curry leaves 10-15
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Coconut water 2 tbsp
  • Ghee 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves 3 tsp
  • Green chillies(slit) 4-6

Cooking Directions

  1. Wash and soak the red gram for 1 hour, drain, put in a pan along with the drumsticks, onions and tomatoes, the turmeric and red chilli powders, and the salt.

  2. Add 3 cups of water, and boil, stirring occasionally.

  3. Disslove the tamarind in 2 tbsp water.

  4. Add to the pan, simmer till the red gram is completley softened.

  5. Heat the oil in the small pan, fry the mustard, sesame, cumin and coriander seeds, and the black gram.

  6. Saute over medium heat till the seeds begin to splutter.

  7. Add the curry leaves, then stir in asafoetida.

  8. Add the contents of the small pan into the cooked red gram and close the lid to holed the aromas.

  9. Simmer for 2 minutes.

  10. Dissolve the jaggery in the coconut milk, add to the pan, and bring to boil.

  11. Reduce the heat again, add the ghee & simmer for 5 minutes.

  12. Garnish with the coriander leaves, green chillies & cury leaves, and serve with rice.
