All those magazine articles that tell you how to ‘cure’ split ends and the many, many products out in the market that promise to reverse the problems of split ends for you, will not tell you one central fact about split ends: there is no way to mend split ends.
There are things you can do to prevent them from happening; there are things you can do to make them less unseemly or evident, but you cannot mend them. The only thing you can do to get rid of split ends is to cut them off, so do not believe any product that says it can ‘correct’ split ends.
What any product can do is at most it can probably smooth down the hair shaft and moisturize it enough that the unseemly split ends are not so much in evidence however if they claim to reverse the damage already made, it is fallacious one. In fact split ends can get worse as the split in the hair travels up the hair shaft, however it cannot get better once the hair has split.
The reason is that once the hair shaft is split at the end, it is not possible to repair it. It is only possible to cut off the end and then take better care of your hair so that you don’t get split ends again. There is however things you can do to make sure that you minimize your chances of developing split ends:
Split ends are a sure sign that your hair is not sufficiently moisturized and that it is too dry. Conditioning your hair regularly will ensure not only that your hair receives sufficient moisture, but also that it is easy to detangle and therefore less prone to stretching that damages hair and can be one of the causes of split ends.
Get Your Hair Trimmed Regularly
Since cutting off split ends is the only real way to get rid of split ends, hair that is prone to split ends should be regularly trimmed so that hair does not get the chance to split.
Limit Blow Drying and Chemicals
Blow drying and styling with curling irons or straightening hair with the straightening iron can be harsh on the hair and can dry it out. Also if you are using hair color on a regular basis, you need to take extra care of your hair.
Protect From the Sun
UV rays of the sun can greatly damage hair, and whenever possible either cover the head when heading into the sun or use a hair product that has an UV filter.
