  • Spring is upon us and the last frost hopefully would have passed by now. It is perfect timing to try and grow Peppers, Chillies and Aubergines in pots, what’s more is that it is very easy to grow from seed. These three crops are grown in the same way and there are plenty of varieties to choose from.

  • Where to grow

  • You can grow these in pots, but they must be placed on a sunny patio, balcony or roof space, to get plenty of sunshine.

  • How to sow seeds

  • • In a 7.5cm pot, fill up with seed compost, and level it up, firm lightly.

  • • Now scatter the seeds thinly on top, sow just 2 or 3 seeds as these are unlikely not to germinate.

  • • Cover the seeds with vermiculate, or fine soil, water and stick a label on to identify later.

  • • Place n a heated propagator or put clear plastic bag over, and place on a windowsill.

  • • You can grow directly in your garden, making sure you have a good fine soil.

  • Vermiculate: Used in construction, ideal for germinating as its aeration processes combined with its water holding capacity is ideal for direct contact with seeds.

  • After germination

  • • Seedlings will appear after a week, remove from the propagator or take of plastic and place on a light windowsill, make sure the soil does not dry.

  • Transplanting seedlings

  • • When seedlings are about 2cm tall they can be moved to their own pot (7.5cm pot would be sufficient).

  • • When roots show at the bottom of the pots, move into a bigger, 12cm pot, filled with multipurpose compost

  • Aftercare

  • • Once the plants reach around 20cm high, use a stake to give support to the main stem securing with garden twine.

  • • When they're about 30cm pinch out growing tips to increase branching.

  • • At the end of May plants can go outside, you can transplant them into a 5-litre pot. As the plants grow, swap the small stakes for a larger cane.

  • • In hot weather you may need to water twice a day. These plants dry very easily and dry compost will quickly lead to a check in growth. This applies particularly to plants grown in a greenhouse, where it can get very hot even in late summer.

  • • The first flowers will appear when the plants are quite small. When this happens feed weekly with a liquid feed high in potash, such as tomato fertiliser.

  • Harvesting

  • • Harvest between July and September, unless you live in a hotter climate like, Pakistan and fruits will be ready earlier. Chilli peppers can be picked green or left longer to turn red.

  • • Each aubergine will produce up to five fruits, depending on variety and the weather - pick when they have reached full size and the skin is shiny.

  • What else to sow in March...

  • Beetroot, Lettuce, Salad leaves, Summer cabbage, Tomatoes, Broad beans, Peas, Parsnips, Radish, Spring onion, Cucumbers (indoor), Spinach and Globe artichoke
